Axe Valley Dojo

Seido Karate

In the Axe Valley Dojo, we learn Seido Karate. Sensei Jack teaches this traditional style as it was first developed by Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura. Seido Karate is a versatile, mentally engaging, physically challenging martial art that strengthens mind, body and spirit. While we train hard in the dojo and strive to constantly push ourselves, safety and self-control are fundamental to our philosophy. The term “Seido” is Japanese for “sincere way”, and embodies our founder’s belief that true karate comes not only from physical fitness but involves the improvement of all aspects of a person’s life. Karate is not just a sport, it is a way of living, which empowers students to grow mentally, morally, and physically and to better understand themselves and navigate life with appropriate confidence.

The Axe Valley Dojo exists to teach Seido Karate to the local community, where members receive high-quality supportive teaching to develop through the practice of traditional karate.

The physical training of traditional karate can be strenuous, emphasising the progressive development of strength, flexibility and aerobic capacity. In addition to developing students with high levels of physical skill, our club aims to develop individuals of the highest moral character. In practice that means training hard and caring for the people around us.

The Axe Valley Dojo was started in May 2022 as the Colyton dojo, after I moved down from Buckinghamshire. The name change occurred when the dojo was officially recognised by the World Seido Karate Organisation in May 2024.

Who can train in karate?

Anyone who wants to put in the effort can train in karate, adjustments can and will be made for those of different capacities. Students range from the very young to senior citizens. Karate students will improve their health, self-awareness, self-confidence and self-esteem. Our disciplined training structure emphasises good etiquette.

The benefits of karate training

The physical training required to reach a high level of skill in Karate promotes overall good health, fitness and well-being. The concentration, commitment and dedication required, help build a strong, confident and determined character. There is a “Dojo Kun”, or training code, which not only ensures a disciplined training environment but serves as a tool for improving behaviour so that a true Karateka will only use their fighting skills as a last resort.

What is involved in karate training?

Training is structured into three main sections:

  • Kihon – fundamental techniques
  • Kata – formal exercises
  • Kumite – sparring

Each section has a range of complexity to suit the different levels or grades of students. Kumite will be introduced as basic blocking and counter-attacking but will progress to free-sparring which develops the timing, reflexes and coordination necessary for self-defence and competition.
